Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a repunched S mintmark with a reverse die that also carries a cud designation (CUD-010). Die markers UVC-085 / DMR-004: Stage A with obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B with obverse at MDS and reverse listed as CUD-010 at MDS, plus a die crack from the E of ONE northwest toward the second U of PLURIBUS and a die crack from the left wheat lines to the rim; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The co-occurrence of an RPM and a cud on the same die pair creates a dual-attribution variety. The expanding die crack network at MDS leading toward the CUD-010 designation documents the progressive rim-area failure. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1940-S was struck during the pre-war era.
