1940 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

1940-S WRPM-001 is a repunched mint mark on the 1940-S Jefferson nickel, cataloged by the Wexler team. A secondary S lies south of the primary S (S/S South). Obverse Stage A has an ENE/WSW die crack across the shoulder and ESE/WNW scratches inside the 4 and 0 of the date. Obverse Stage B is a new obverse die. Its shoulder has an ENE/WSW crack lying near the bust; on the head, a NW/SE crack bends west at the head's top. On Reverse Stage A, a die scratch heads SW from about the left center of the P in PLURIBUS, and scratches head ENE from the right center of the L in PLURIBUS. On Reverse Stage B, the roof has a large die chip on its right side, and a die crack rises from just right of the dome's center and continues north through the second U in PLURIBUS, on that letter's right side. William P. Waring submitted Stage A and John Bordner Stage B. CONECA lists it as RPM #1. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
