1940-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

First in the Wexler Team catalog for 1940-S Jefferson Nickel RPMs, WRPM-001 is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1. Two obverse-reverse pairings are documented. Stage A obverse: ENE/WSW die crack across the shoulder, ESE/WNW die scratches inside 4 and 0 of the date. Stage B pairs a new obverse with an ENE/WSW crack on the shoulder close to the bust and a NW/SE crack on the head turning west at top. Stage A reverse: scratch SW from left center P in PLURIBUS, scratches ENE from right center L in PLURIBUS. Stage B reverse: large die chip on the right side of Monticello's roof, die crack from slightly right of the dome center running north through the right side of the second U in PLURIBUS. Two stage pairings indicate either a die replacement or redocumentation of separate states. San Francisco's 1940 Jefferson Nickel output was the second year of the series, following its 1938 debut replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Obverse Stage B: New obverse die.
