Description

Holding the primary catalog position for the 1940-S date and cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel shows an S/S South displacement from only the third year of Felix Schlag's design. Die markers track two reverse pairings: UVC-004 / DMR-002 with Stage A at EMDS reverse, a die crack across the shoulder at LMDS, and a die crack in hair; UVC-005 / DMR-003 with Stage B at MDS showing a die crack on the right roof, a die crack from the lower right building to rim, a die crack from the dome north to rim through the right side of the second U of PLURIBUS, an obverse die change at EMDS, a die crack across the shoulder, and two die cracks in hair; Stage C with a die break on the right roof at LDS and obverse die cracks strengthening at MDS. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the progression from roof crack to roof break documents escalating Monticello facade failure.
