1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

1940 WDDO-002 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Very strong Class VI extra thickness covers every digit of the date, heaviest on the lower 9, along with the letters of LIBERTY and of IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST). Obverse: a short gouge jutting from the 0 of the date at its top right, and vertical scratches in front of the eye. The reverse is a doubled die as well, which Wexler's doubled die files list as 1940 1¢ WDDR-004. It shows fairly strong extra thickness on both wheat ears and stems, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), the dots, the outer letters of USA, and the tops of ONE's letters; Wexler refers readers to that listing for more detail. Karen Peterson submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 2-O-VI; the Coppercoins number is 1940P-1DO-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
