1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1940 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. GOD and WE show an extremely close spread toward the rim. Obverse: faded diagonal scratches in the field under GOD; light vertical scratches through the date's 9; vertical scratches in front of the forehead; and a series of vertical scratches behind the lower hair. Reverse: a series of vertical scratches above the UN of UNITED; a vertical scratch right of the top of CENT's T; a series of horizontal scratches through the TES of STATES and from the bottom of CENT's T; a mostly horizontal scratch heading west from the bottom of the first S in STATES; and horizontal scratches right of AMERICA's last A. J. C. Moreland submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
