1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-024

Description

1940 WDDO-024 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Beneath the normal eyelid lies an extra eyelid. Obverse: a thin crack across the bust's base; a scratch heading SW from the inner curl of the date's 9; old NW/SE scratches under the 0; X-shaped scratches to the right of the chin; a short scratch running south from LIBERTY's B; a NW/SE scratch between LIBERTY's Y and the hair on the back of the head; strong scratches, E/W and NE/SW, through IGWT (IN GOD WE TRUST) and the top of the head; a N/S scratch between TRUST's R and U; and curving NW/SE scratches on the forehead. The reverse is also a doubled die, which Wexler lists as 1940 1¢ WDDR-026. Its markers: a worn scratch in the BU of PLURIBUS; a scratch running NE from the middle of PLURIBUS' R; a faint scratch from the top of the O in OF to the left wheat; a scratch at the top of AMERICA's E; a thin N/S crack in the left wheat; thin scratches, NE/SW, between ONE's O and N; a short NE/SW scratch between CENT's T and the right wheat, in the field; and a NW/SE scratch at the left wheat's stem.
