1940 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1940 1-cent WDDO-016, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an extra eyelid north of the normal eyelid. The obverse carries extensive die markers: a light die crack along the tail of the 9, worn vertical scratches below the chin, a short heavy scratch south from the nose tip, a diagonal crack through VDB, two worn vertical scratches near the rim above L in LIBERTY, vertical scratches above Y in LIBERTY, worn horizontal scratches through GOD, and diagonal gouges through and left of WE. This concentration of scratches, gouges, and cracks makes the obverse one of the most heavily marked dies in the 1940 doubled die catalog. The reverse is also a doubled die listed in the Wexler files, making this die pair doubly notable. The high sequence number — sixteenth for 1940-P — reflects intensive research on Depression-era Lincoln Cents, where high production and aging equipment produced numerous varieties. Worn vertical die scratches show below Lincoln’s chin. A short heavy die scratch runs south from the tip of Lincoln’s nose. Two worn about vertical die scratches show near the rim above the L in LIBERTY. A series of vertical die scratches show above the Y in LIBERTY. Worn horizontal die scratches run through GOD. Diagonal die gouges run through and in the field left of WE.
