1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016

Description

1940 WDDO-016 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. North of the normal eyelid lies an extra eyelid. Obverse: a light crack along the tail of the date's 9; worn vertical scratches under the chin; a short, heavy scratch running south off the tip of the nose; a diagonal crack through the VDB initials; two worn, roughly vertical scratches near the rim over LIBERTY's L; a series of vertical scratches above its Y; worn scratches running horizontally through GOD; and diagonal gouges in the field left of WE and through the word itself. Wexler's files also list the reverse as a doubled die, 1940 1¢ WDDR-040. Its markers: a vertical scratch running south from the lower right curve of ONE's O; a light scratch rising north from the lower curve of CENT's C; an area of die deterioration between the N and E of CENT; and two separate cracks on the right wheat stalk, one low and one central. Brian Ribar submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 4-O-IV.
