1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012

Description

1940 WDDO-012 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The E of WE and the 4 and 0 of the date show light separation. Obverse: a series of diagonal scratches from the lower chin into the date's 1; a series of diagonal scratches heading SE from the eye, eyebrow, and lower nose; light diagonal scratches through LIBERTY's ERTY; a long concentric scratch close to the rim from the bottom of LIBERTY's L to below the VDB initials; diagonal scratches between GOD's D and WE's W; a wavering scratch joining the bottoms of IN's N and GOD's G; a series of horizontal scratches through GOD; and a hash-marked pattern of scratches right of the hairline. The reverse is a doubled die as well, which Wexler's doubled die files list as 1940 1¢ WDDR-020. Its markers: a series of vertical gouges (or possibly planchet issues) through STATES' E and S; a diagonal scratch in the field between the left wheat's right edge and the O of OF; swirling scratches in the field below OF and AMERICA's first A, and below RICA; and a diagonal scratch running SW from the top of AMERICA's last A. John Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references.
