1940 Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

1940 WDDO-004 is a doubled die obverse on the 1940 Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The eyelid is doubled, with the extra one east of the normal eyelid. Obverse: a curved scratch running south between the 1 and 9 of the date; a diagonal scratch through the 9's central opening; a cluster of gouges in the field under the chin; a series of horizontal scratches through the jacket's rear shoulder fold; light concentric scratches running from the back of the bust below LIBERTY; a gouge (dot) behind the bust, well below LIBERTY's RT; faded diagonal scratches through GOD's G and O; and a series of light horizontal scratches through WE. Reverse: light vertical scratches rising from the left wheat tip; a diagonal scratch through the top of PLURIBUS' L; a series of vertical scratches between ONE's O and N; scratches in many directions between ONE's E and CENT's T; a long, mostly vertical scratch through the second T of STATES; and light vertical scratches through the very bottom of the left wheat stem. Brian Ribar submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler notes this die replaces the original one, which proved too minor to photograph.
