Attributed as Wexler Variety ID 1940-D 1c WDDR-002, this Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a very close Class II spread toward center on both upper wheat ears, EPU (E PLURIBUS UNUM), and the dots — a rotational hub-doubling event affecting multiple reverse elements simultaneously. This variety forms a paired doubled die marriage: the obverse die is listed as WDDO-006, meaning both sides carry genuine hub doubling, significantly enhancing collector appeal. Die markers provide reliable attribution aids beyond the doubling. On the obverse, a die crack runs east-northeast from the upper S in TRUST, documenting progressive deterioration. The reverse carries two diagnostic scratches: a long die scratch south from the center of M in AMERICA, and a short die scratch south-southeast from the upper left T in CENT. The die cracks alongside doubled die characteristics indicate this die pair saw extended service, with the obverse crack useful for sequencing die states.
