1938 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

1938 WDDO-003 is a doubled die obverse on the 1938 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling spreads north on GOD, WE and the UST of TRUST; Wexler says it resembles WDDO-002 but is a little weaker. On the obverse, many N/S scratches cross IN GOD WE TRUST, a scratch curves south from beneath the tip of the nose, and two scratches curve SW off the I in LIBERTY, starting at its upper left. The reverse is itself a doubled die, listed in the Wexler files as 1938 WDDR-002: a Class II spread toward the center shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR. Its markers are a strong gouge sticking out of the right wing below the N in UNITED and a scratch crossing the middle of the RIC in AMERICA. Joe Feld submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 4-O-V.
