1938 Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1938 WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1938 Washington quarter, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extremely strong extra thickness shows on the lower wings, the leaves and branch stems, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the obverse, NNW/SSE scratches lie over the OD in GOD, and a scratch heads SW from the tip of the nose. On the reverse, left of the upper part of the first T in STATES there is a strong gouge, and another strong gouge runs SW/NE right of the lower F in OF. Ron Pope submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 1-R-VI, and Crawford as CDDR-001. Wexler includes it in its "Best Of" varieties.
