1937-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Light extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and LIBERTY characterizes this second documented DDO for the 1937-S Lincoln Wheat Cent. San Francisco struck approximately 34.5 million cents in 1937, a modest figure relative to Philadelphia, and varieties from S-mint Wheat Cents tend to be scarcer in absolute terms due to the smaller surviving population. Die tracking data includes UVC-1396 and DMR-006. Stage A represents the early die state (unconfirmed). Stage B at mid-die state also remains unconfirmed. Stage C progressed to late die state, where the obverse reached LDS and a die crack developed in the upper left wheat grains. Victor David Brenner's obverse, with its serif-style inscriptions and detailed bust truncation, was susceptible to hub doubling that manifested as thickened lettering rather than dramatic separation.
