1937-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as RPM-002 (UVC-209, DMR-003), this 1937-S Buffalo nickel presents a remarkable triple-punch mint mark: S/S/S Northeast, Northeast. Three distinct S impressions are visible in the northeast quadrant of the primary S, making this one of the more dramatic repunched mint mark varieties in the Buffalo nickel series. Three die stages have been documented. Stage A represents the early die state, though this stage remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in mid-die state. Stage C shows both reverse and obverse in late die state. The Buffalo nickel, struck in an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel from 1913 through 1938, was entering its final years of production when this die was used in 1937. The S mint mark denotes San Francisco Mint production. Triple-punch mint marks arise when the hand-punched mint mark logotype was seated and struck into the die multiple times in slightly offset positions before the engraver was satisfied with the placement; two repositionings over the original punch produce the S/S/S sequence visible on RPM-002.
