1936 (S) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Holding the primary WRPM-001 designation from the Wexler Team, this 1936-S Washington Quarter documents the most prominent repunched mintmark variety for this early San Francisco issue — only the fourth year of John Flanagan's Washington Quarter series, which debuted in 1932. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1, the variety benefits from dual attribution that broadens its recognition among collectors and dealers alike. The 1936-S is a semi-key date in the Washington Quarter series, with a relatively modest mintage compared to Philadelphia issues of the same year, and any attributable die variety on a semi-key date commands heightened collector interest. Each San Francisco working die received its S mintmark through individual hand-punching — an engraver positioned a steel letter punch on the reverse and struck it with a mallet, and when the initial impression deviated from the intended location, a corrective second blow created the overlapping images that define a repunched mintmark. As WRPM-001 with CONECA RPM #1 cross-listing, this variety represents the benchmark against which subsequent 1936-S RPM discoveries are measured.
