Documented with VarietyVista codes UVC-054 and DMR-002, this 1936-D Washington Quarter carries the RPM-001 designation — the primary repunched mintmark variety for the date. Struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint, it belongs to the early years of John Flanagan's Washington Quarter series, which debuted in 1932. Repunched mintmarks from this era arose because mint marks were hand-punched into working dies at branch mints, and any misalignment between impressions left overlapping traces on struck coins. The variety has been tracked across three die states: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse show mid-die-state characteristics, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). Depression-era Washington Quarter production was considerably lower than later decades, particularly at Denver, giving RPM varieties from the mid-1930s an inherent scarcity advantage.
