Description

Sixth repunched mintmark in the census for the 1936-D Mercury dime, RPM-006 exhibits a D/D Rotated CW (clockwise) displacement that sets it apart from the more common cardinal-direction repunchings found on this date. The clockwise rotation indicates the initial D punch was applied at a slightly counterclockwise rotational angle relative to the intended orientation, and the corrective second punch at the proper angle created an overlapping pair of D impressions that diverge most at the terminal serifs. Denver struck approximately 16.13 million Mercury dimes in 1936, enough production to populate a catalog of at least seven documented RPMs. Adolph A. Weinman's reverse design positions the D mintmark in the small field to the right of the fasces, where the manual hand-punching process occasionally produced not just positional displacement but rotational misalignment — the punch entering the die surface at a slightly tilted angle. Rotational RPMs create a distinctive diagnostic signature: rather than a secondary D image uniformly shifted in one direction, the two overlapping impressions share a rough central axis while the outer portions — particularly the serifs and terminal curves — diverge at angles that reflect the rotational offset. This produces a more complex overlap pattern than simple directional shifts, making rotational varieties both more challenging to detect and more diagnostically interesting when confirmed. Among the seven documented 1936-D RPMs, RPM-006's rotated displacement provides a different visual signature than the predominantly northward-displaced examples in the same census, offering variety specialists a distinctive acquisition target. Examination under 10-15x magnification should focus on the D mintmark's serif areas, where the angular divergence between the two punches is most pronounced — the clockwise correction means the secondary traces appear slightly rotated counterclockwise from the final position.
