Description

The 1936-D Mercury Dime WDDO-001 displays a spread toward the center on the date, providing a subtle but confirmable doubling on the numerals when examined under magnification. Earlier die state examples may show more pronounced doubling than later die state specimens, a reminder that die wear can diminish the visibility of this variety over time. The Wexler Variety ID is 1936-D 10¢ WDDO-001. This obverse die is part of a documented die marriage with a repunched mintmark reverse cataloged in the Wexler RPM Files as 1936-D 10¢ WRPM-005, a D/D North variety. Collectors who locate a WDDO-001 attribution should also examine the reverse mintmark for the northward repunching that characterizes WRPM-005. Two diagnostic die markers have been identified. On the obverse, a die scratch runs from west-southwest to east-northeast in the field to the right of the lower neck. On the reverse, a small die gouge is present below the right end of the top crossbar of the E in ONE. Confirming both markers alongside the date spread and the D/D North mintmark strengthens the attribution considerably.
