1936-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Bearing the second position in the 1936-D Mercury dime repunched mintmark sequence, RPM-002 exhibits a D mintmark punched over a previous D displaced to the north, cataloged as D/D North. Denver's production of approximately 16.13 million Mercury dimes in 1936 generated enough working dies to produce multiple independently documented RPM varieties — each representing a separate die on which the mintmark punching technician's first attempt required correction. Adolph A. Weinman designed the Mercury dime in 1916 for a coin design competition, and his reverse featured the fasces bound with an olive branch — a classical symbol that Weinman intended to represent unity and peace. The mintmark location on the reverse, nestled near the base of the fasces, provided the small but critical area where each die received its individual D punch. The northward displacement on RPM-002 indicates the first D impression landed above the corrected final position, placing the remnant of the initial punch above or at the top of the primary D. Collectors hunting this variety should focus magnification at 10-20x on the upper portion of the D mintmark, where vestiges of the first impression may manifest as a thickened upper serif, an extra stroke segment above the letter, or a shadowed outline extending beyond the normal boundaries of the character. The northward direction is particularly diagnostic because it places the remnant in a position less likely to be confused with die deterioration doubling, which tends to produce a shelf-like extension in the direction of metal flow rather than a cleanly directional secondary impression. RPM-002's northward orientation also provides a clear contrast with RPM-003's westward displacement, allowing collectors with both varieties to directly compare how different directions of mintmark misplacement create distinct visual signatures within the confined area surrounding the D on Weinman's reverse.
