1936-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014
ErrorDescription
A D/D repunched mintmark shifted east — where a secondary impression of the Denver D is visible displaced to the east of the primary D — marks this fourteenth Wexler-cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1936-D Mercury Dime. Repunched mintmarks occurred throughout the era when each working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punching by a mint employee. If the initial punch did not land cleanly, or if a second impression was needed to deepen the mark, the slight positional difference between punches left visible traces of both impressions on struck coins. The east displacement on WRPM-014 means the secondary D sits slightly to the right of the primary, a direction distinguishable from north, south, or west shifts seen on other RPM varieties. Die markers include a short horizontal die gouge through the upper E in LIBERTY on the obverse, and a short die scratch running northwest-southeast between the lower N and E of ONE on the reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1936-D 10-cent WRPM-014, submitted by John S. Gillilan, this variety was cataloged by the Wexler Team. Adolph A. Weinman's Mercury Dime (more accurately the Winged Liberty Head Dime), struck from 1916 through 1945, features a small coin diameter (17.9mm) where mintmark details are proportionally significant. Fourteen documented RPM varieties for 1936-D reflects the variability inherent in hand-punched mintmarks and the systematic examination Mercury Dime specialists apply to this beloved series.
