Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista, the 1936-D Wheat Cent DDR-003 is a two-phase die variety tracked across three die stages under two distinct die tracking code pairs. The first phase (Stages A–B) carries die tracking codes UVC-2518 and DMR-010; the second phase (Stage C) carries UVC-2519 and DMR-011, reflecting that the obverse die was changed partway through the working life of the reverse die. The primary doubled die feature is extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM and on the upper wheat ears — a spread consistent with hub doubling that is best examined under 7x–10x magnification with oblique lighting. Stage A (EDS) is unconfirmed pending additional specimens. Stage B (MDS) develops a die chip at the lower right wheat grains in an LMDS substage, followed in the LDS substage by a die crack running over V.D.B. Stage C (EDS) is the beginning of the second obverse die and adds a second die chip at the lower right wheat grains in the LDS substage. This progressive die staging makes DDR-003 a rewarding variety to assemble across its full die life, with each stage offering distinct die markers that confirm placement within the sequence.
