1935-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006
Error
Description
Three separate S mintmark punching impressions are documented on this 1935-S Buffalo Nickel variety: the primary S, a secondary S displaced northeast, and a tertiary S displaced west, giving RPM-006 its designation as S/S/S Northeast, West. The Buffalo Nickel series, struck from 1913 to 1938 with James Earle Fraser's striking bison and Native American portrait design, employed hand-punched mintmarks on working dies throughout its production run — a practice that generated the entire RPM class for the series. Die markers are cross-referenced as UVC-159 and DMR-010. Stage A was early die state (unconfirmed). By Stage B (mid-die state), the reverse had reached mid-die state and a horizontal die scratch appeared under the third feather. Stage C was late die state (unconfirmed). The 1935-S Buffalo Nickel was produced at the San Francisco Mint during the final years of the series. Repunched mintmark varieties on Buffalo Nickels attract consistent collector attention, particularly those with multiple displaced punches across two or more compass directions, as RPM-006 presents.
