1935-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA 3-R-IV, this Class IV doubled die reverse on a 1935 San Francisco Mint Buffalo Nickel shows a spread to the southwest that is most visible on the P of PLURIBUS, with lighter doubling on some other letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM and on hair details along the buffalo's back. Class IV doubling results from a pivoted or rotated hub impression, producing a spread pattern that radiates from a pivot point rather than running in a uniform direction. Die markers assist in attribution: the obverse shows die clash marks in front of and below the chin of the Native American portrait, while the reverse carries a small raised lump in the middle of the rear left leg. The 1935-S Buffalo Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint during the final years of the Buffalo Nickel series, which ended production in 1938. San Francisco's 1935-S mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces represents a moderate output.
