1935-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Documented with the confirmed attributions UVC-151 and DMR-002, this 1935-S Buffalo Nickel DDR-001 is also listed as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide — establishing it as the primary doubled die reverse for this date and mint. The variety displays strong spread in several areas of the reverse: under E PLURI of PLURIBUS, below UNITED, behind the middle of the left rear leg of the bison, and under portions of FIVE CENTS. The strength of the doubling across these widely distributed design elements makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses in the Buffalo Nickel series. Stage C is confirmed with both the reverse and obverse in late die state (LDS), documenting the variety at an advanced point in the die's service life when accumulated wear has begun to soften the doubling somewhat. An earlier Stage B in early-to-mid die state (EMS) remains unconfirmed, meaning no documented specimen has yet been formally attributed to that intermediate stage. Late die state examples, while showing slightly less crisp doubling, often exhibit additional die wear markers that help confirm die identity. The strong spread on this variety, particularly in the legend areas, makes it identifiable even on well-circulated specimens.
