Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1935 San Francisco Buffalo Nickel exhibits an S/S South displacement. Die markers UVC-158 / DMR-009: Stage A EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B reverse and obverse MDS; Stage C LDS (unconfirmed). The cataloger requests new color, high-magnification digital photographs. The southward displacement indicates the initial S was punched slightly above the intended position, with the corrective punch moving the letter downward. Fraser's design places the S beneath FIVE CENTS in a recessed area that made precise vertical alignment challenging during manual application. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1935-S had a mintage of approximately 10.3 million pieces. The 5th cataloged RPM for this date reflects active variety searching within the San Francisco die population of the Buffalo Nickel's penultimate production years.
