1935-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

Carrying catalog identifiers UVC-149 and die marriage DMR-009, this 1935 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel documents the eighth repunched mintmark variety attributed for the date. The variety results from multiple applications of the D mintmark punch to the working die, a routine step in die preparation that occasionally produced positional shifts between impressions. Denver's 1935 production of 12.09 million Buffalo Nickels required numerous die pairs, and the individual hand-punching of mintmarks into each working die meant that each die carried its own unique mintmark characteristics. RPM-008 adds to the already substantial catalog of D-mint repunched mintmarks for 1935, a date that has proven particularly productive for RPM research. The Buffalo Nickel's Type 2 reverse, with the bison standing on a recessed flat plain, had been the standard design since partway through 1913. Struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy, the 1935-D remains readily available in lower grades while choice uncirculated examples command significant premiums, particularly when bearing identifiable die varieties.
