Description
Displaying a D/D repunched mintmark with a wide southward displacement, this 1935 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel is cataloged as UVC-146 with die marriage DMR-006. The wide spread between the primary and secondary mintmark impressions makes RPM-005 one of the more visually dramatic repunched mintmarks among the multiple RPM varieties documented for the 1935-D date. Denver struck 12.09 million Buffalo Nickels in 1935, a robust production run that consumed many die pairs and generated a substantial catalog of mintmark varieties. The southward displacement indicates the engraver's initial punch landed north of the final intended position, requiring a corrective second application that left traces of the original impression visible below the final D. Fraser's Type 2 Buffalo Nickel design, featuring the bison on a flat, recessed plain, was in its twenty-third year of production by 1935 and would continue for only three more years. The 75% copper, 25% nickel composition remained unchanged throughout the series. Wide RPM spreads like this one are particularly sought after because they are easier to attribute without high magnification.
