1935-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Cataloged as UVC-148, DMR-008, this 1935 Denver Mint Buffalo Nickel displays a repunched mintmark where the secondary D impression is visible beneath or adjacent to the primary strike. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both obverse and reverse in Early to Mid Die State, Stage B with both sides in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel, struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel from 1913 to 1938, featured a recessed design that made the coins particularly susceptible to wear. Denver produced over 12 million nickels in 1935, during the later years of the series when die production was well established but mintmarks were still individually hand-punched into each working die. The hand-punching process inherently introduced positional variations between the initial and corrected D punch, creating the repunched mintmark varieties cataloged across the series. RPM-007 can be traced through its die stages from relatively fresh surfaces in Stage A through progressive die wear, offering collectors multiple attribution opportunities depending on the specimen's state of preservation.
