1934 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1934 1¢ WDDO-001, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent is a notable COMBO variety: the reverse of this die pair is also a doubled die, designated WDDR-002, making both sides doubled die varieties from a single die marriage. The obverse displays a very close Class II spread toward center on IN GOD WE TRUST. A die crack extends east from the lower back of the bust over V.D.B., the designer's initials. The reverse carries a die scratch north-south left of the vertical bar of T in CENT and a die scratch south-southwest from the lower inside of M in AMERICA. Dual doubled die attribution on both obverse and reverse is uncommon in the Lincoln Cent series, making COMBO varieties especially sought after by specialists who value the convergence of two distinct hub doubling events in one die pair. Struck in the standard 95% copper bronze composition during the Great Depression, the 1934 Philadelphia Cent saw reduced mintages compared to pre-Depression years.
