Description

Emerging from Depression-era Philadelphia Mint production, the 1934 Lincoln Wheat Cent CU-1C-1934-05R carries a reverse rim cud — the fifth cataloged for this date. The 1934 cent holds a significant place in Lincoln cent collecting: with a mintage of over 219 million at Philadelphia alone, it was the highest-output cent date in several years as the economy began its slow recovery and commerce demanded fresh coinage. A rim cud forms when part of the die face fractures away at the rim, and every subsequent coin bears a raised, featureless area in place of the lost design. Five documented reverse cuds for 1934 reflect the heavy die consumption required to produce over two hundred million cents, with each cud representing a distinct die that failed during service. The bronze composition — 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc — remained unchanged from the series' 1909 beginning. Documented by the Cuds on Coins project, CU-1C-1934-05R provides a window into Mint production realities during the Great Depression, when keeping presses running and coinage flowing was both an economic necessity and a logistical challenge that pushed dies to their mechanical limits.
