Description

This 1934 Lincoln Wheat Cent is the third documented cud for the issue. A cud forms when a portion of the die rim breaks away, creating a raised featureless area on the struck coin. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. The 1934 Wheat Cent was produced during the Great Depression, when the Philadelphia Mint struck over 219 million cents to meet circulation demand during a period of economic hardship. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln obverse, introduced in 1909, was paired with the familiar wheat ears reverse throughout this era. The high production volume meant dies were used extensively, increasing the likelihood of rim fractures and cud formation as dies wore through their operational life. Lincoln Wheat Cents from the 1930s Depression era remain widely collected, and die break varieties like this third cud add an extra dimension of interest for specialists who study the physical deterioration patterns of dies under sustained production pressure.
