1934 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-003
Error
Description
Medium extra thickness on all lettering and the date characterizes DDO-003 for the 1934 Lincoln wheat cent, a variety that VarietyVista tracks under UVC-2830 with die markers reference DMR-007. The die stage progression reveals an interesting chronology: Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, while Stage B at mid-die-state is identified by a light die crack running through the V. D. B. designer's initials on the obverse and MDS condition on the reverse. Stage C at late die state awaits documentation. The die crack through Victor David Brenner's initials is a doubly significant marker -- it provides die state identification while simultaneously passing through one of the design elements most scrutinized by collectors, since the VDB initials were famously removed after public controversy in 1909 and only restored in 1918 in a much smaller format below Lincoln's shoulder. The "extra thickness" doubled die expression differs from spread doubling in that the doubled image sits nearly atop the primary image, adding width and height to the letters rather than creating visible separation or shelf-like edges. Philadelphia struck 219,080,000 wheat cents in 1934, a Depression-era production figure that reflected the ongoing economic hardship of the mid-1930s. The 1934 date occupies an interesting position in the wheat cent series: common enough for affordable acquisition but old enough to carry the patina of genuine vintage coinage, and DDO-003 adds variety attribution value to coins that might otherwise be considered generic circulated wheat cents.
