1934 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-101 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Picker's Guide, DDR-001 for the 1934 Washington quarter represents the strongest and most widely recognized doubled die reverse for this early Depression-era issue. Strong extra thickness appears on all lettering and outer design elements of the reverse, making this one of the more visually dramatic DDR varieties in the entire Washington quarter series. VarietyVista tracked this die pair under UVC-0009 with die markers reference DMR-004, documenting a Stage A where the reverse presents in early die state accompanied by a die crack developing in the upper hair at mid-die-state, with the obverse itself independently listed as DDO-001. Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. The companion obverse carries additional variety designations: ODV-002 (Medium Motto) and DDO-001, creating a die pair where both obverse and reverse are independently significant varieties -- a circumstance that substantially enhances the coin's appeal to attribution specialists. John Flanagan's Washington quarter reverse, featuring the heraldic eagle design that would remain in use through 1998, debuted only two years before this 1934 issue, and early Washington quarters occupy a premium position in the series hierarchy. Philadelphia struck 24,080,000 quarters in 1934, a modest figure by later standards, and the FS-101 cross-reference ensures that DDR-001 appears in the standard reference that most variety collectors consult first when cherry-picking rolls and dealer inventories.
