Description

Strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the wheat ears and stems, and OF AMERICA makes this 1934-D Lincoln Wheat Cent one of the more visually prominent doubled die reverses for the early Denver Mint Wheat Cent era. Die markers UVC-2599 and DMR-012 support attribution. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the reverse at Mid Die State with the obverse already at Very Late Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State is unconfirmed. The divergence between obverse and reverse die states at Stage B is noteworthy — the obverse deteriorated significantly faster than the reverse, suggesting either softer die steel on the obverse or greater mechanical stress on the anvil die. Denver Mint Wheat Cents from the mid-1930s were struck during the Great Depression, when mintages reflected constrained demand for circulating coinage. The strong classification on the doubling means the extra thickness is visible under standard magnification, with the motto and wheat ear stalks showing clearly thickened letterforms and design elements where the secondary hub impression reinforced the primary image.
