1934-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Holding the DDR-001 designation—the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the date—this 1934-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is documented in the VarietyVista system as UVC-1321, DMR-011. The variety exhibits strong extra thickness on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the upper wheat ears, and the upper edges of ONE, indicating a significant hub misalignment during die preparation. Three die stages have been identified. Stage A represents early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, also unconfirmed. Stage C reveals a die in its final phase of service: a die crack develops over V.D.B. (the initials of designer Victor David Brenner, located at the base of the reverse between the wheat stalks), and a rim cud forms at the K-5:30 clock position. The co-occurrence of a die crack and rim cud in the same late die state indicates severe structural fatigue. The 1934-D cent was among the early Denver Mint issues following the Great Depression production gaps, and DDR-001's strong extra thickness on three separate design elements makes it one of the more visually impactful doubled die reverses in the pre-war Wheat Cent series.
