1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
Cataloged as RPM-003 by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-119 and die marriage record DMR-005, this 1930-S Buffalo nickel displays an S/S mintmark repunched to the northeast. Three die stages document the variety's production life. Stage A in early die state has markers unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die state develops a light die crack through the lower CEN of CENTS on the reverse, while the obverse has also reached mid-die state. Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The repunching direction to the northeast means the original S mintmark impression is partially visible displaced from the final position, with elements of the first punch detectable below and to the left of the accepted strike. Buffalo nickels from the 1930-S issue had a mintage of just over 5.4 million, modest by series standards, and the convergence of a lower-mintage date with a documented repunched mintmark creates appeal among both Buffalo nickel specialists and error variety collectors. Additional high-magnification digital photographs of specimens have been sought to further document the repunching characteristics.
