1930-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Leading the catalog for the 1930-S date, this Buffalo Nickel RPM-001 was documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-117 / DMR-003 and a rich array of diagnostic markers. Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B at MDS develops a die clash through E PLURIBUS on the reverse with die scratches under the chin on the obverse. Stage C at LDS shows the reverse in late die state with a die gouge dot in the field under the chin on the obverse. James Earle Fraser designed the Buffalo Nickel, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with a relatively modest mintage of approximately 5.4 million pieces, making die varieties from this date inherently scarcer. The die clash through E PLURIBUS reveals where obverse design elements transferred onto the reverse during an unprotected die contact event.
