1929-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

The 1929-S Standing Liberty Quarter RPM-001 displays a repunched S mint mark with the secondary impression visible to the northwest of the primary — a directional offset indicating the first punch landed slightly southeast of its intended position before being corrected. The Standing Liberty Quarter series (1916–1930) was in its final years when this variety was struck, and hand-punched mint marks on these coins represent the era before mechanized mint mark application standardized positioning. Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty design features Liberty in a flowing gown with a raised shield, a composition that required substantial die pressure to fill the high-relief details. San Francisco-minted Standing Liberty Quarters from the late 1920s saw relatively modest mintages compared to Philadelphia, and RPM varieties from this series are less extensively cataloged than those on later denominations, making documented examples particularly valuable to variety collectors.
