Description

Bearing the Fivaz-Stanton designation FS-502 and identified as the first documented repunched mintmark for the 1928-S Standing Liberty Quarter, this RPM-001 shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S with the secondary impression shifted to the east — S/S East. The additional notation MMS-001 (Small) indicates this is the first documented mintmark style for the date, utilizing the small S punch. Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty Quarter design, produced from 1916 through 1930, features a relatively small area on the obverse for the mintmark, and the confined space made precise punch placement critical during die preparation. When the mintmark punch was applied twice with slight eastward displacement, it created the overlapping S impressions that define this RPM variety. The Fivaz-Stanton number FS-502 places this in the standard RPM reference alongside the Cuds on Coins catalog, providing dual-system attribution. The 1928-S had a mintage of approximately 2.64 million pieces — a moderate figure for the series — from the San Francisco Mint, which continued striking Standing Liberty Quarters through the final year of 1930. Repunched mintmarks on Standing Liberty Quarters are particularly valued by collectors because the short-lived series offers a limited date range and the quarters' high silver content means fewer survive in collectible grades compared to later base-metal issues.
