Description

Standing Liberty Quarters from the San Francisco Mint are prized for their artistic design and modest mintages, and the 1928-S belongs to the latter portion of Hermon MacNeil's acclaimed series that ran from 1916 through 1930. RCD-25c-1928S-01 is the first cataloged retained cud on the 1928 (S) Standing Liberty Quarter, documenting a die fragment that separated fully from the working die but remained held in place within the die cavity during striking. This retained fragment produced a raised, flat, or weakly impressed area on the coin's surface—a signature distinct from simple die cracks because the metal behind the fracture has lost its structural connection to the die body. The Standing Liberty Quarter series is known for frequently weak strikes in the head and shield areas, a characteristic of the design's high relief that placed unusual demands on working dies.
