1927 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
Error
Description
Two extra eyelids below the main eyelid on Lincoln's portrait distinguish this Wexler Team attribution on the 1927 Lincoln Wheat cent, catalogued as Wexler Variety ID 1927 1¢ WDDO-012. A related variety, 1927 1¢ WDDO-013, is also cross-referenced in the Wexler files. Obverse die markers are extensive: an intact O in GOD; a die gouge well above the E in LIBERTY; a die scratch under the chin running northeast-southwest; and a die scratch running southeast from the upper lip. On the reverse, two parallel die scratches run northeast-southwest inside the lower N in CENT; short die scratches run vertically inside the upper E and T in CENT; a small die gouge is present above the E in STATES; a small die gouge appears left of the upper O in OF; and a small die scratch sits inside the lower E in AMERICA. Doubled die obverse varieties arise when working dies receive successive hubbing impressions at slightly different positions, permanently recording the misalignment. The 1927 cent is struck in 95% copper alloy. The double eyelid feature, visible on well-preserved examples, is the most compelling first-look identifier before the die markers confirm attribution.
