1927 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

A strong extra eyelid positioned well southeast of the main eyelid gives this 1927 Lincoln wheat cent variety immediate visual impact, cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDO-003. The obverse die carries a horizontal die gouge through the upper portion of the first T in TRUST, while the reverse presents a network of die scratches: two parallel scratches running northeast from the top of the C in AMERICA to the bottom of the second T in STATES, a short scratch southwest from the bottom of the C in AMERICA, and another short scratch southwest-to-northeast left of the bottom of the T in CENT. The dramatic eyelid doubling makes WDDO-003 one of the more visually compelling early Lincoln cent doubled dies, where the secondary eyelid is displaced far enough from the primary to be readily apparent under moderate magnification.
