1927 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
ErrorDescription
Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, with its carefully sculpted facial features, reveals hub doubling on WDDO-009 through a diagnostic that requires focused examination: an extra eyelid visible below the main eyelid on Lincoln's profile. This subtle anatomical doubling indicates the hub shifted slightly between impressions, duplicating the fine contour lines of the eye area on the 1927 Philadelphia Wheat Cent die. Die markers include die scratches running SSW/NNE through the 19 in the date and through the TY in LIBERTY on the obverse, with a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the bottom of the E in ONE and a vertical die scratch through the left side of the first T in STATES on the reverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1927 1¢ WDDO-009, with no other cross-references currently known. Nine documented doubled die obverses for the 1927 Lincoln Cent reflects the systematic research applied to 1920s Wheat Cents, a decade of generally high mintages when Philadelphia routinely struck over 100 million cents annually. The 1927 date saw approximately 144.4 million cents produced, requiring substantial numbers of working dies across the production run. Eyelid doubling is among the more challenging doubled die diagnostics to confirm, as it requires clear, well-preserved specimens and careful comparison against the normal single-impression profile to distinguish genuine hub doubling from die deterioration effects.
