Description

Displaying a doubled eyelid in the upward direction, WDDO-007 on the 1927 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent produces an extra eyelid visible above Lincoln's main eyelid — a secondary impression displaced northward that creates a wider, more prominent eye socket appearance on Victor David Brenner's portrait. Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1927 1¢ WDDO-007 with no other known cross-references, this variety's upward eyelid displacement contrasts directionally with other eyelid-doubled Lincoln Cents: the secondary lid contour sits superimposed above the primary upper eyelid, effectively raising the apparent brow line and giving Lincoln's eye an enlarged or widened look. The upward (northward) displacement direction indicates the secondary hub impression was offset slightly toward the top of the die relative to the primary, a direction that would theoretically also affect other design elements above or below the eye — yet the doubling's visibility concentrates exclusively on the eyelid, where the fine engraved line provides the most sensitive surface for detecting small vertical offsets. This localization to a single facial feature follows the same pattern seen on other Lincoln eyelid DDOs, where the portrait's facial topography creates a natural visibility threshold that only the eyelid's sharp contour exceeds. The 1927 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at the Philadelphia Mint. No significant die markers have been noted on either side, making the direction and position of the extra eyelid the sole diagnostic criterion. Confirmation requires 5x to 7x magnification focused on the upper eyelid area, where the secondary contour appears as a distinct line above the primary.
