1927 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002 / DDO-001

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501 (13.51), the 1927-D Lincoln wheat cent DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-002, is a doubled die obverse with a widely separated extra eyelid. Wexler writes the Cherrypickers number FS-01-1927D-501 (013.51) and notes that the same obverse carries the D/D repunched mintmark it lists as WRPM-001. Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties places the extra eyelid very far SE of the primary one. Obverse stage A has a very strong secondary eyelid, a strong D/D South repunched mintmark (Wexler's WRPM-001), two parallel die scratches crossing the upper forehead west to east, and lighter scratches in the hair above the forehead. In stage B the secondary eyelid and the repunched mintmark are both weaker and abrasion shows between the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST and the rim. In stage C the secondary eyelid is very weak, the secondary mintmark has been abraded almost away at its lower part, and abrasion doubling shows above IN GOD WE TRUST. Reverse stage A has a dot in the field beneath the C of CENT on its left side, a short die scratch NE from the upper left of the N in UNITED, and a short die scratch jutting SW off the R of AMERICA at its lower left leg. Stage B shows light north-south abrasion lines above UNUM, and stage C very heavy ones above and between its letters. Russ LeBeau submitted stage A, upgraded by Lloyd Hanson, who also submitted stages B and C. CONECA lists it as 1-0-IV and RPM #1; its Coppercoins number is 1927D-1DO-001. Wexler notes that John Bordner took the photos for the Wexler Doubled Die Files. VarietyVista, crediting Jose Cortez, describes a strong doubled eyelid to the south. Under marker codes UVC-0019 and DMR-002 it tracks the secondary mintmark: strong in stage A, with both sides early; medium in stage B, with both sides in a middle die state; and weak at the bottom in stage C, with both sides late.
