Description
Discovered in 2010, the 1924 Peace Dollar VAM-1AS — designated Pitted Obverse #6, indicating it is the sixth documented die rust variety for this date — features raised dots and splotches in the field in front of Liberty's head from die rust pitting on the obverse (die II1/B2a). Cataloged with an I-2 interest level and R-6 rarity rating, the die marker is a fine horizontal die scratch through the top of the 9 in the date, providing a secondary diagnostic feature beyond the rust pitting itself. The concentration of raised dots in front of Liberty's face suggests moisture accumulated in this area of the die during storage, creating the pits that transferred to each subsequent striking. Six or more pitted obverse varieties for the 1924 date alone demonstrates how common die rust was across the enormous number of dies consumed during Peace Dollar production. The specific die scratch through the 9 provides a reliable confirmation marker when examining candidate specimens.
