1924-P VAM-1A

Description

Bill Fivaz discovered VAM-1A in January 1974, making it one of the earliest documented Peace Dollar VAMs. Classified II 1 · B2a and rated I-2 R-4, VAM-1A holds Top 50 Peace Dollar VAM status. The defining obverse feature is a raised vertical bar of metal descending from the left side of the D in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST down to the rim — a die break fragment that produces the "Bar D" designation. This die break is visible with minimal magnification on mid-grade examples and serves as a reliable naked-eye identifier for experienced collectors. The reverse (B2a) is the normal die for this pairing. VAM-1A was formerly numbered VAM 1A1; the current designation reflects renumbering after VAM 1A2 was eliminated as a duplicate. The 1924-P Peace Dollar is a Philadelphia Mint 90% silver issue and one of the highest-mintage dates in the Peace Dollar series, providing a large base population within which VAM-1A specimens are available but still merit the R-4 rarity rating.
