Description

Discovered by Michael Ash in September 2006, the 1923-P VAM-1AT "Rusted Reverse Die" Peace dollar preserves the evidence of oxidation damage to the reverse die surface that occurred before or during its production life. Cataloged as 1AT II 1 · B2a (Rusted Reverse Die) with die classification I-2 and rarity rating R-5 (approximately 30-75 known), this variety transfers the effects of die corrosion onto struck coins as fine raised dots scattered across the reverse surface. When a die's polished steel surface develops rust — from exposure to moisture in storage or during handling — the iron oxide crystals create small pits in the die face that fill with planchet metal during striking, producing tiny raised bumps or dots on the finished coin. The reverse B2a description locates these raised dots from the rusted die in the lower and upper fields and around the word PEACE on Anthony de Francisci's reverse depicting the perched bald eagle. Philadelphia struck approximately 30.80 million Peace dollars in 1923, the highest-mintage date in the series, yet the R-5 rarity for VAM-1AT suggests this particular die saw limited production. Rusted die varieties provide a window into Mint storage and handling practices of the 1920s — a die that developed rust was typically removed from service and polished, but if the rust had already pitted the surface, polishing could not fully restore the original finish. Michael Ash's 2006 discovery identified the characteristic dot pattern as rust-origin rather than die deterioration doubling or planchet surface imperfections, both of which can produce superficially similar raised textures. Collectors should examine the reverse fields and the area around PEACE under 15-20x magnification, looking for randomly distributed fine raised dots that repeat consistently across specimens from this die — the repeatability distinguishing die rust from random planchet imperfections.
