1923 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1923 $1 WDDR-004 and cross-referenced as VAM #2, this Peace Dollar is a combination variety where the obverse is independently documented as 1923 $1 WDDO-001 — making this a dual DDO/DDR die pairing where both dies experienced separate hub doubling events. The obverse doubling shows on the date, TRUST, the bottom hair braid, and slightly on the forehead and designer's initials, with a die crack running along the front of the base of the neck and rays — progressive structural features accompanying the hub doubling. The reverse doubling was photographed by Brian Allen for the Wexler Files, contributing professional documentation to the attribution record. The VAM #2 cross-reference connects this variety to the Van Allen-Madison cataloging system for Peace Dollars, providing an independent attribution pathway through the specialized dollar variety community. The Peace Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci, struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1923 with a substantial mintage of approximately 30.8 million pieces — the highest production year in the Peace Dollar series. Composed of 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter, the 1923 Peace Dollar's large mintage meant a correspondingly large working die population from which varieties could emerge. The combination of obverse and reverse hub doubling from independent manufacturing events, documented through both the Wexler files and the VAM system, creates a variety that sits at the intersection of two major attribution communities — each bringing different diagnostic approaches and classification frameworks to the same die pair.
