Description
Discovered by David Close, VAM-1N on the 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar preserves an unusual die surface artifact: faint scribbling die scratches in front of Liberty's nose and lips on the obverse. Classified as II1 - B1a with R-5 rarity (30–75 known), "scribbling" die scratches appear as irregular, randomly oriented fine lines rather than the purposeful directional marks left by die filing or polishing. These scratches may have resulted from abrasive contact during die handling, storage, or an uncontrolled polishing attempt. The location in front of Liberty's facial features — one of the highest-relief areas of Anthony de Francisci's design — makes the scratches visible under moderate magnification as they interrupt the smooth field transition near the nose and lips. The 1922 Philadelphia Peace Dollar, with the series' highest mintage at over 51 million, has produced an extensive VAM variety census, and surface artifacts like scribbling scratches represent the more subtle end of the die anomaly spectrum.
